Problems Are God’s Way Of Tapping You On the Shoulder

I just completed one of my final Introductory Seminars for my Patterns of Excellence Program and am happy to report that my next Intake 5-8 April is Almost Full. However, I want to relate to you an interesting experience I had with one of the participants who signed up last night.

He told me that the reason he chose to sign up eventually (he heard about my program 3 years ago, but never took action) was because his problems has become so severe that he could not take it anymore. His wife decided to leave him, he lost his job and suffered a mild heart attack just a few days ago. All this pain finally drove him to do something to change his life.

He told me that he wanted to come to the program to learn how to make all his problems go away. he said he wanted to be a successful and happy person like me who seemed to have no problems. He will only be happy if his life was free of problems and he believed that I could help him achieve this.

That’s when I stopped him and said, ‘ You have got the WHOLE WRONG IDEA!’ ‘ I cannot make your problems go away!’ In fact, I believe that the more successful you are, the more problems you will have. Everyone has problems at any given point of time in their lives. In fact, I would bet that Bill Gates (the world’s richest man) has his own set of problems and I can tell you that his problems are a lot bigger than yours and mine.

The only people without problems are those lying in the graveyard. So, if you want to have no problems, then GO AND DIE (of course I did not say this…he would have slapped me and not signed up).

But the question people always ask is why must life be full of problems? Why can’t everything go the way we want? Why must things be so difficult? Why do some people get hit with such big problems in life sometimes? (e.g. kids run away, wife leaves them, diagnosed with cancer, business failure).

Well, I believe that whenever a ‘problem’ arises in our life, it is God’s way of tapping us on the shoulder and telling us that we need to learn something or change our thoughts or actions.

If we keeping falling ill, it’s a tap on the shoulder that we are not eating right, not exercising enough or thinking of negative thoughts (emotional stress is the number of cause of physical illness). If our kids don’t want to listen to us, it’s a tap on a shoulder that we are not listening or spending enough time with them.

If you receive complaints about your work, it is a tap on the shoulder that you are not putting enough effort or you are doing things the wrong way. If you keep getting into arguments with your partner, it is a tap on the shoulder that you doing what is required to sustain a good relationship.

When we acknowldege God’s taps, learn the lesson and take positive action, we will move closer towards our goals and dreams in life. The trouble with most people is that they IGNORE the taps by justifying, avoiding, denying, giving excuses or blaming someone else for the problems arising. They say things like ‘ The stupid boss is just finding fault!’, ‘the clients are just unreasonable’, ‘ my kids are so ungrateful and defiant’, ‘ these chest pains will go away’, ‘ I wish my wife will quit nagging…just ignore her’.

So, what does God do when you don’t learn and do something to his taps? He starts tapping EVEN HARDER! This is when your problems start getting worst! Your business starts losing clients, the chest pains get worst, your kids start arguing and shouting back, quarrels with your partner gets more and more frequent.

And if you continue to IGNORE these taps, God will do whatever it takes until he gets his message across to you that you need to change your thoughts and actions. He will HIT YOU ON THE HEAD WITH A BRICK. This is when those major problems whack you in life… Your partner leaves you, your kids run away from home, you suffer a heart attack or you go bankrupt.

So, how do people choose to respond when they get hit with a brick? Some people will spend keep rubbing their head and complain of how much it hurts. These are the people who will just wallow in self-pity and depression. Some people will blame the person who threw the brick at them. These are the blamers in life.

Some people will reflect and ask, ‘what must I learn from this?’ ‘What is God trying to tell me?’. By asking this question and reflecting, they will finally get the message and start changing their life for the better. So, how are YOU dealing with God’s shoulder taps now???

    Hi Adam,
This is another of your excellent blog that I have read. I am totally agreeing with you on this. We must take responsibility for our own life, well-being, successes & learning experiences and make the choices that will empower us to achieve whatever we want to achieve. Often times, we have not been aware of the consequences of our choice and end up on the wrong turn. Things get worse and yet we are still using our old self to make the same choices without consideration of changing our own self. Change will come with some discomfort and it is this discomfort that will make us stronger and more enriching in our experience of life.
    Focus, Balance and Keep Moving!

    Hi Adam,

Yes, I agree with what you’ve shared. Problems or challenges as I prefer to call it will be there all the time to help us learn, to make changes and improve and grow in life. If one learns from each lesson and testing, one is able to move forward with much more clarity, strength, courage, wisdom, humility and compassion. It expands and raises one’s level of consciousness and awareness.

Whether it is God’s gentle tap or hard knocks, they are wake up calls to help one be awakened, set self right with self and re-set one’s direction again. If we take them positively, we should be thankful for such problems or challenges.

    Hi Adam,

It is a real pleasure to hear you giving the right place to our GOD as the resource of everything that comes in our lives in order to take action toward God’s direction. God is the Author of our lives and He knows exactely the ” thoughts that He thinks toward everybody ” and He wants us just follow His instructions in everythind we do. That’ s true!

May God Bless Again for this Message!

I read your article and your comments page. It is full of good advise and comments although a major factor is left out and that is sin . You must repent of your sins before anything takes place,it is the key factor in growth. Change comes as a result of repentance of our sins. Getting rid of sin brings true life. Good Luck

Not only be aware of God’s “taps”, but be aware of God. The very best way to avoid the blame game is to be response - able by responding to God’s urgings in our live. It is not about me, but about my relationship with God.

I shared a lot with people about my experience in change after POE. Generally, ppl are reluctant cos of their limiting belief, they have the fear to accept change, ie : a working person will feel reluctant to quit the job eventhough they aware of the stress of working n they truely understand working with someone couldn’t achieve “financial comfort”.
They keep on complaining until their neck drops but still continue working witht he boss.

One day, a trauma happen to them or something serious happen to them, then they realise abt the MUST to change. Why ppl need such a serious trauma hit on them n then they realise to change?

  15. Sam on March 25th, 2007

My experience of this is that God or the universe or life itself teaches us a lesson. I once heard it said that the earth is like a classroom. You stay stuck on the same problem only until you “graduate” from the lesson that is trying to be taught from the problem. When you pass the lesson, God gives you a pat on the back in the form of a mental, financial, physical, relationship or other breakthrough and then somewhere down the line the next challenge appears. If you do not pass, the lesson appears again. It is therefore essential that we learn and grow in order to live happily and be fulfilled. In my own experience, I have been on a lesson regarding fines and parking tickets. I graduated from this lesson after reading Adam and Stuarts book. It is not readily available in UK, so I was glad to purchase the ebook when it was released recently. I kept holding in mind the injustice and unfairness of getting a speeding camera ticket or parking ticket and feeling resentful about it. Finally I let go and accepted it as a blessing in disguise. Now I realise it was all my own doing. Smart move. And I am on fire in my life now because I got through this little lesson. God was telling me to let go of my anger. You would not believe what is happening as a result. For example I just met my natural father I never met in 27 years. I also found out I have 2 brothers I never knew I had. In addition I am absolutely beautifully equipped to handle such news in a positive and productive way. The knock on effect from listening to these “taps” and being willing to take action seems to be payoff after payoff.

    Hi Adam,
Thanks for your email. Quite Encouraging. I ever learn from a great public speaker and thought me one thing.
” To change is Neccessary, Not to Change is Destructive”.
And the word destructive means alot of things to us in our life. And it can really cripple our life if we still hang on to the same old way. And in order to allows things to change, first of all, we need to RENEW our mind. If our mind is not renewing, we are still doing the same old thing. And when we have faith, faith empowers hope and that our vision so that it will bring all the substances towards what we are hoping for.

    Adam,
The world is full of hurting and angry peopleDaily our children are sexually ,physically or verbaly abused.Adults have been damaged by betryals violence, divorce, annd down right hardships. But I would not attribute these to God works; Because 3rd John 2;God says”Beloved I pray above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” But as we face our crises if we take our eyes off the circumstances, and set our spiritual focus on God as our divine source of provisions, act on God’s promises in His word we will always win.

    Dear Adam,

i do agree completely with you that it’s god hint for us to change..but may i ask u a question? It’s easy to say tat..but i would like to know what would you do, if after changing and changing..the end result is still the same? as in u are still in tat dead end. And not just change once or twice or trice..but been trying on and on for more than 7 straight years and the end result is still the same old thing. If you are me, what would you do? Still believe tat there is even god? I dunno, but to me i tink god is dead or if he is still there, most probably he is sleeping or mayb i dunno, he just dun like me=)

  19. Bill on March 25th, 2007

Good post Adam and I do agree your basic premise. However, keep in mind sometimes bad things happen to good people. AKA “911″.

And I sure you are not implying that God “gives” us problems. Problems as you suggest are the result of our actions in most cases. We have the freedom to choose how to live and we then live with the consequences of our actions - good or bad.

But.. others also have freedom to choose and they may choose to inflict unjust hardship upon us. However, I do believe that God gives us the ability to overcome these hardships and learn and grow from them.

Just want to caution anyone giving simple solutions to another’s problems when we don’t know all the facts and yes I do believe we are all accountable for our own actions and lives.

I’ll stop with one other thought as I have probably already stirred the pot-
Death does not necessarily mean our problems go away.

PS Adam, I think the audios and reports are excellent and I have gained from them.

    Hi,
I am new to all of this business and just started. But I have good intention to succeed and know that it is a big need to shange ones mind set for success. How, to work with changing ones thought forms to not only positive thougths but to let go of the old negative ones and fill in with the positive. But there are layers upon layers that comes up of the old crap to be released againg and again. Never ever giv up. There is just one way - the high way - straight forward with some bending curves and when one hit bending curves - just relax and know this is fine - everything is ok and as it should be.

  24. caddilacaman on March 25th, 2007

Hi Adam, in principal i must agree with you 100%, however there are 2sides to each coin and we are not all motivated in the same ways and we all have similar or different interests in life and business. Conflicts arise when there is no mutual consent or agreement of terms or also violations of terms of agreements-there are winners and losers , however some losers can’t and will not accept the facts. We decide our destiny by the choices we make in retrospect to the situations we encounter daily and must deal with-some good and some bad , however because we attract both positive and negative emotions they will also attract what we put out so in fact our emotional state of mind and our emotional feelings attract -magnify-and bring back to us more of positive or negative situations for us to deal with. God gives us the freedom of choice and also the consequences that follow. danny

    Hi Adam,

Yes, you may not be God, Adam, but you were my Saviour, & that last blogpost was enlightning. If everyone could realise how TRUE it is, I’m sure there would a lot more happy people. :) in the world.

I added this in here, I had sent an email, but it didn’t get through, so thought I would add it in here.
    ========================================
I had to send this, as I am still a little in shock! but I did a testimonial for your Success with NLP, course & you did say to keep you up to date with my successes, so here goes…. The last few days have just gotten better & better, But Today,

My Inbox was just full of Payment notifications received…. This is a little insane, But I swear it’s 100% true,

Since doing Your course, I knew my life had changed, but I can’t even describe what has been happening the last few days…. since,

I had always wondered what that would feel like to see my inbox full of payments to me, but wonder no more! It has happened, all the little programs I have been in are all starting to pay off, and it seems like all at once!

I made more money today, than I did the whole of last year, that is only because I spent more than I made, but what a buzz. I am on cloud nine, or could be ten! LOL ,

I just wanted to keep you up to date, & oh my , I am sure I will have lots more to tell, within the next few months.

Thank You Again, Your Course is amazing, & It is undescribable what has been happening ever since.

    Sincerely Dianne Kneller. :)

    Adam,

How true and we still have people looking for nirvana, go to some course and all their troubles will disappear.

One other important point. The more problems, the more opportunities if we keep an open mind. It also tunrs a negative posture into a very entreprising posture. As I recall in your seminars, everyone’s problems is an opportunity for him or someone else to look into. It’s getting past the emotions that is the challenge, especially when it;s personel.

All th ebest in your next Whoosh session.

People used to say when there is problem, ‘This is life’! Yes, when there is life, there is problem always.

  31. redsmoke on March 25th, 2007

yup, agree totally. we must take charge of our own lives and not depend on others to help set it straight. others could only provide guidance, ultimately, the onus lies with ourselves to actually act on it and make things better. Whatever it is, it is our own lives and it is entirely up to us how we want to lead it.

  32. Calvin on March 25th, 2007

Yup, will have to agree with Peter. You should not equate man with God. No matter how much respect I have for Adam, we cannot belittle the Creator of all mankind.

Nonetheless, it’s an interesting way of looking at the problems we face. But not too sure if such an analogy is truly apt. Still, it’s a good way of ensuring we do not get discouraged by problems and run away from them. Face your problems bravely! And turn failure and obstacles into success! Remember: Problem + Solution = Opportunity ;)

  33. Eric on March 25th, 2007

You need a change to move forward in your life!
    You need to stay focused!

But it’s hard to stay focused, when there’re loads of
    obstacles on your way.
I’m talking from personal experience because I live
    in ex-socialistic country.
Everyone is telling you that you have to take action to succeed but
    it’s not the same here.
I’m sure there will be a lot of changes coming in Bulgaria soon.

As for me, I promised myself not to let anything or
anyone to interfere with my business goals and intentions. :-)

Thank you very much for the cool tips, Adam!

What you give you get back ten fold…. I have heard this all my life and I have also experienced this personally. Most people will think in a negative fashion even when they are giving a compliment. Those who are plagued by problems are getting back what they have given, ten fold.

God is love but he also gave us the freedom to choose. Some have faith but most have doubt. They complain about everything and seldom are grateful for anything. They say they have faith but they have little or not faith in themselves.

Give kindness and compassion tempered with patience and see what you get back. Be generous with your time and talent without concern for compensation and you will find your needs are more than provided for.

Change your perspective and look at problems as puzzles. Problems are trouble and annoying while puzzles are games and fun to solve. But if you find a situation too difficult to cope with just say “God, this is too much for me, please take care of this one. Thank you.”

    Hello Adam
Facinating concept, not that I disagree with it, but isn’t it a bit unfair waiting on God expecting Him to be your mentor?
Most of us are so busy being busy that we do not think about our situations and to then blame God for our lives to get worse I believe is wrong.
We try our best to improve both physically and mentally but sometimes we simply do not know what next to do.
And, change for the sake of change is not very helpful. How would you know what part of the change was the part that worked.

    Hi Adam,

Yesterday you have asked an important question which I didn’t yet answer:” How are YOU dealing with God’s shoulder taps now??? ”

So, let me just inform you that I’ m a greatly bound man and slave of about $50,000 debts to pay this month. And my household income is just $100. I was just working for other people in my business as a supplier of electrical material, fire and air conditioner in my residence country. I’m full of debts and receive several call a day from my creditors. THIS IS FOR MY CASE God’s shoulder Taps to teach me that I have not to borrow, I have to lend to many nations as He promised it to me.

So, to” deal with this God’s shoulder Tap” is just to abandon this kind of life definitely in order to allow God to walk with me again in everything I do, even to give me money to pay all those debts.

Also, as I have already confessed this evil thing that I have done against my God, and repented from it, I believe that the gracious and merciful has forgiven me, and I’ m convinced in own mind now that I have money to pay to those and the gate of prison will not be opened against me because, No problem of mine is so bigger than my Lord that I may not have again confidence in Him. For He promised me saying:”Behold, I’m come quickly: hold fast what you have, that no man take your crown ” Revelation 3:11.

By this word from God, I have confidence in God that, I will become Multi-Millionaire like yourself. This is my great dream before to depart from this world according to the will of God who gives me power to get wealth. I’ m not YET POOR! Because I have learnt from God’s shoulder Tap.

    Hi Adam,

I would like to thank you for sharing this enlighting email as it was full of value.I am glad that we were connected in 2006 as you have always provided great value.

I do agree i.e. God does bring things to us in order to get our attendion, thereby allowing us to take action and look for ways to get out of”valley experiences” or help us to get to the top of a tough mountain.

I also believe that life is made up of thin threads and certain people are brought into one’s life for various reasons e.g. to assist, motivate
    guide encourage etc.,

I believe that one of the keys to success is to never give up and to
persist and stay focused and chase your dreams.

    Kind regards

  46. Toly on March 26th, 2007

Hi, Adam! It’s absolutely clear: we have to focus not on the problems but on achievements and positive feelings. It is diffucult to concentrate on something positive when problems surrounded you but this is one way only.We have to convince ourselves to see something positive in every event which happened with you.I have passed all possible and not possible problems in my life, even was thinking about suicide, but
God gave me a power to re-think and look the problems from the different angle. And good things came to switch my life to the better.
Just keep believe into yourself and make positive thinking your one and only way of understanding the world around .And God’s smile will never leave your face.

Unfortunately there is a tendance to assume if something is wrong in your life, it is your fault alone. While this maybe true in many cases it is not the complete answer. The Bibical story of Job is a case in point, whether one agrees with how his distasters came about or not. “Why do bad things happen to Good People?” is an age old question, and while each of us is better off by accepting Responsibility, or I prefer Ownership, of our circumstances there is an element within “Chaos Theory” that is not accommodated in this theoretical presentation.
Much more discussion needed, rather than just glib answers,

    Dear Adam Khoo,

I read your letter and also letters of outhers.

I belive every persom must know their ability to learn more every day. It`s a kind of trust in us that will give strenth to focus our mind to see and hear. what others say or read from books or from various paperes or magazines.

As for me I go to Church daily and receive communion.

Why I am doing, First my faith is deep rooted, through my parents example. They have shown so much care and love.
What we are doing now in return the same what they did to us. My children are very wonderful and we are very happy.

God will give only to people who are active and willing to share with outhers what you know, not only how to earn money also the knowledge to see others also benefit what they thought them..

I see your way is the best to achieve some thing that will give every one a chance to earn an honest and legal way.

Forgive me if I am rwong.

    Best regardes.

When God says, He will never leave us nor forsake us, I guess He was saying, He will continually tap us until we are doing what we should and moving in the realm and frame of mind He desires us to.

Adam Khoo is right with his analogy. God uses circumstances around us to make us see things His way.

So we must take responsibility for our lives and actions to become the best we can, whereever we find ourselves

I was one such person who was good at excuses and constantly resisting God’s taps. After reading your inspirational report, ” Get Out of the Rat Race”, I realised that we are responsible for whatever that happens to us. Now I made a target to acquire your full pack, ‘Secrets of Self-made Millionaire’ within the next six months. Of-course I am starting from scratch.

    Dear Adam

I enjoyed reading your post on your take on problems. I certainly agree with much of what you said.

God tell us things in many different ways, but we tend to ignore them - why? I can’t speak for everyone, but for me it is usually because I don’t want to face up to the truth, or it means that I may have to change and do something different which can sometimes be rather scary!

I do believe that we all have a variety of challenges (I use this word as I don’t really like the word problem!). It is how we deal with them which makes us successful or not.

I admire what you have achieved so far in your life and as I work on my own challenges I hope that what I have gleaned from your blog and e-book helps me even further.

Two thumbs up for the way you deliver the message that problems are ALWAYS there. It’s how we manage and deal with it is what matters.

Another good read! Keep it up!

Adam! you need to understand that when we were born,we weren’t told about the families we would be born into or the magnitude of problems that we would face.We would have turned back if God had to show us the entire package with regards to what we would go through.Problems come to the rich, the poor, the middle class, the upper class and can be regarded as irrevokeable.Problems is like being involved in a storm where your ship is tossed to and fro and all you can see is darkness all around you.But the moment you start seeing the light of the lighthouse you forget about your problem, and you start concentrating on the light, because it’s a sign of hope and absolution.

    Derrick Said,

[…]if after changing and changing..the end result is still the same? as in u are still in tat dead end. And not just change once or twice or trice..but been trying on and on for more than 7 straight years and the end result is still the same old thing. If you are me, what would you do? Still believe tat there is even god? I dunno, but to me i tink god is dead or if he is still there, most probably he is sleeping or mayb i dunno, he just dun like me=)[…]

    To Derrick:

You’ve got to analyse what you’ve been doing to change. Just change alone will not bring you results. It’s the right changes that will. So don’t lose hope. Keep trying till you succeed. That’s a trait of the truly successful people.

And God is NOT dead. The only way to God’s kingdom is through salvation. And God does not judge us like how we think He does, it’s only us that keep judging Him.

  55. Axl Ching on March 27th, 2007

First of all, “God helps those who help themselves” is a erroneous belief. No where in the bible is it ever written. If we can help ourselves, we don’t need Him, but it’s proven, in a lot of cases, humans can never really help themselves (no matter how you NLP yourself), that’s why we need God. “God helps those who cannot help themselves!”

Secondly, while I appreciate Adam’s business articles, I cannot agree with what he wrote. You don’t need God to give you problems in order to learn something just like you don’t have to burn your child’s hands to let him/her know the danger of fire..

Thirdly, I don’t know about the rest, though I love Adam’s books and alot of his stuff, I don’t think he’s that qualified to talk about God and I’m sure God didn’t make him a prophet.

  56. Jinlong on March 29th, 2007

    Wow Adam very well said..

You too Calvin.. God is always with us.. He brought us to our problems, and He’ll definitely bring us through it (if you would do yourself a favour by DOing sth)

    Don’t give up guys!

    All the best,

    Jinlong

    Hi Adam,

what you said is just so true… people simply ignore problems until they become the last stage and then they start doing something to change and solve the problem… and they keep complaining that why is heaven and god so cruel to them for giving them such a big problem… what they did not notice is that god had already given them so many chance to redemn the problems by giving them symptooms but people simply choose to ignore it…

    Yes!

I wish we are living in a perfect Harmony world!

My personal meaning of problem is… cause = Effect ( Result )

May I share my own experience:

I was overweighted when I was in primary 5 and as a result… I was not being selected to be part of my school’s basketball team! My friends then & now are mostly interested & proficient in physical sports!

I thought my teacher in charge of basketball Team selection was unfair!

This gave me a reason to started jogging and even swimming when at that time, I can’t even breathed properly!

The more I exercised, The better & confident I am in jogging & swmming
I now swim & Run better & faster after nearly 10 years of routine…

I thank myself, I admit my being overweight problem and go swimming!

    For a better world!

While I’m not sure that there is a God who sits around tapping people on the shoulder, your essay did deliver a powerful point. Our problems are an expression of a certain limitation of thought, and unless we make the effort to adapt, they will get worse and worse. Unfortunately, as you pointed out, most people do anything but look at themselves as the cause of the problem, and find fault with whoever is in their line of vision.

    Dear Sir,

Your message is excellent. I agree with you in toto. But I am constrained to mention that these are the similar messages from every philosopher. But what about the solutions? To be more specific what are the ways to refine our self. Every one says to change. how to change.

I don’t know how to explain this. Any way thank you for the message.

I helped look after an elderly Salvation Army lady, and was treated like an ‘adopted daughter’ by her.

We got on very well and when she died about a year later, I missed her terribly.

I was trying to cope with a horrifying addiction to poker machines and she helped to keep me sane at times!

For about six months, her ‘presence’ was very strong about me, and if I started to get angry about things that were bothering me, I would get a message of some sort from her.

Sometimes it felt like I had been stopped by an invisible hand!

When I looked at the photo on my wall, I got the feeling that she was laughing at me for being angry over trivial things.

I found this rather disconcerting at first, but soon got very used to it, and it was like she was physically present at times.

One of her first ‘messages’ to me was when she altered ALL my clocks to different times ! I thought I was going crazy !

She was trying to get me to get off my butt and stop feeling sorry for myself etc, and once I took the right action, I was left in peace! This sort of thing happened many times, and I always knew it was her and had to stop and think about my plans and likely change them! I knew she was looking after me still and that I had to change my attitudes etc, to please her and have a happier life.

One night I had lost all but $2 in a poker machine, and I prayed to her to help me if she could. She was ‘on duty’ that night, and a few minutes later I won a jackpot of $900 and was able to pay the rent owing and other bills and buy food, and go to get special acupuncture done to turn off the gambling addiction again!

! !How was that for “Godly” interference in one’s life?

She is now one of His angels and deservedly so !

I still think about her a lot, and I am sure I get a visit every now and then to see how I am doing and to let me know I am still one of her ‘family’ but no longer get the strong messages to change my habits etc.

I usually answered her with “alright, alright, OK - I won’t do that” and that semed to be enough. As long as I stopped whatever it was I was about to do or even think about doing, she was happy !

I still miss her at tmes, and was sorry I never wrote down any of her stories and they are forever lost now.

I enjoy the newsletters and find things in all of them that appeal to me in different ways.

    All,

We all talk about wealth and it’s all great. Recently I came across a friend from malaysia who became bankrupt. I am wondering if there is anyone in this forum who have had a similar experience. I need some guidance to help my friend out, to find her way back…then get wealthy.
