Are You a Monkey With Your Hand Stuck in a Coconut

Recently after one of my Wealth Academy introductory seminars, a man came up to me and told me how he wanted so much to achieve financial freedom and after listening to my 3-hour free seminar,he was even more inspired. However, he kept hesitating to sign up for the course.

What kept him from signing up was his fear and limiting belief that he was a slow learner and that he would not be able to learn and use all the strategies I had to teach. he kept saying that he was bad at math and that he found investing too risky to try. He kept lamenting that he has no self-confidence and that he had many bad habits (like giving up on things half-way) that would prevent him from benefiting from Wealth Academy. Then he came up with another reason that paying $3,000+ for the course would be equivalent to his one month’s salary. He was just not willing to invest one-month of salary for a course that he did not believe could help him because of all his own limitations.

At that moment, it reminded me of a story I heard long time ago. It is a true story of how tribesmen caught monkeys in Africa. What they would do would be to take a coconut and make a hole that is just big enough for a monkey’s hand to go into. However, once the hand is closed, it will not be able to come out. They would tehn tie this coconut to a tree. Next, they would place a handful of peanuts (not the NKF one…the real one) into the coconut and leave a trail of it along the ground all the way to the nearby forest. They would then sit and wait patiently.

Sure enough, a monkey would soon appear and start picking up the peanuts one by one. Upon reaching the coconut, he would plunge his hand into the large fruit and grab as many peanuts as he can. The next thing he knows, his hand is trapped in the coconut. With his fist full of nuts, he cannot take his hand out.

Once knowing that it has been trapped, the monkey will then scream and shout and alert all the tribesmen who will then come along and capture the monkey! This poor monkey would then lose its freedom forever.

Now, at any point in time, could the monkey have ACTUALLY escaped? Of couse he could. All he had to do was to LET THE PEANUTS GO. But you know what? The nature of the monkey is such that it would NEVER LET GO of its peanuts. Why? Because it is so afraid of losing it. As a result, the monkey loses more than just his peanuts…he loses HIS FREEDOM!

I told this story to the man and told him, do you realize that you are acting like this monkey right now? I said it with as much tact as I could to prevent being slapped in the face. You hold on so tightly to your limiting beliefs, habits and $3,000 that you miss out on your chance of escaping from the rat race and the mediocrity of life and achieving FINANCIAL FREEDOM.

Is it really worth holding onto all these things just because it feels safe and comfortable to do so? How long are you going to be trapped and keep on complaining? I said to him, ‘let go of your past, your peanuts and go for something much bigger in life that your deserve’. ‘Go for your success and financial freedom’. I am happy to report that he will be joining me in the next Wealth Academy in April 2007

    Wow Adam,

This example is really a good
wake up call for people out there.

I believe there are lots of people like
this who prefer to play safe just
    because they lack self-confidence,
have limiting beliefs and better more,
    lazy!

And yet they whine and complain about
their life…. My advice, get a life then!

If they open their bank books and
wallets but not satisfied with it, then
by al means do something. Sitting
around doing nothing won’t get them
    anywhere, anyway…

Since they have nothing to lose,
why not try and bear in mind that there
is still chance for a better life?

I’d go for that kind of chance any day,
    without hesitation.

For those of you out there who desire a
better life for God’s sake do something
about it. I know some of you whose pride
is so important you’re scared that people
would laugh at you if you failed.

Well, guess what? If you stood and did
nothing about your whining and complaining,
wouldn’t that be more of a shame and a
    laughing stock?

    Fail miserably, but don’t be a loser…

    Cheers,
    SaM

That’s a very nice story again, Adam. I sure hope you could conduct your seminar here in the Philippines. Though I personally think that the $3,000+ fee will be a big hindrance for “aspiring” entreps here in the Philippines because the $3,000+ fee is already P150,000+ here in the Philippines. That is the YEARLY income of middle-class employees here. :) Unlike in your story, the $3,000 fee is only a MONTH’s income of the person you talked about.

Anyway, I’ve purchased your SSMM program via my wife’s paypal account. I’ll start to read it over the weekend and I’ll give you a testimony after reading and listening to it.

    Thanks and more power!

    Hi Adam
You are right with the monkey story and yes i used to be one,
but i am coming out of it,taking charge of things.SSMM has impacted me a lot to view things in a practical manner, take massive action and have the attitude
that when you feel you are right,no matter what hindrances you face, just maitain your identity,go with your beliefs and take massive action by focussing on the right things and making it happen. The success is sure if you follow the right path which are FOCUS, COMMITMENT,DETERMINATION,PERSEVERENCE and CONSISTENCY.and that is what i have learnt and SSMM has been a treasure to me and i have started my online ventures too.
    Thanks

    Hi Adam,

Is glad that my friend told me about your book in the first stage. At first, I just feel nothing special about what he said about your book. I was the “Monkey” before, I don’t even want to borrow the book from my friend (even though he offer to borrow me the book).

Happened to be one that I drop by the Popular book shop. I saw your book on the best seller rack, I pick it up, i start reading it……..AWESOME!!! (what you told us in the preview seminar) …it really an awesome. But you know what, I was the one always “procrastinate” to take action. I told myself, let go back and do some research from the internet before i bought it….after the research I found that there is a online package for the bundle of audio book and the ebook for “secrets of self made millionaire”….without the 2nd tought, I bought the book through the internet…(I’m still reading and listening to the book)

Again, my friend (same person) inform me about the preview….at first I also “procrastinante”….but finally I had made up my mind to join the preview…….you know, I really feel the “power’ from your program….and the end I was the first participant to register for the program that night….I really want to go through this program to explore my goal and the value of my life….

Really thanks a lot to Adam and Stuart for your effort and genorosity to share your knowledge and experience

    Hi Adam,

i don’t want to be like the monkey..if i were to be the monkey,i’ll let go of the peanuts and escape..i’m sure there’ll be other than peanuts-other opportunity to be grabbed..i will cahnge my strategy and search for other food source..i don’t want my emotions to affect my life..most people work for money..why don’t they let “money work for them”?i used to be the monkey..after your motivational camp,i learnt how to dispose my ego,low self-esteem and self-confidence..

This story just describes me. I use to be afraid of losing the little I have, not knowing that sometimes you need to lose the little you have to win big. With your frequent mails, I am begining to learn a-new that, I need to have faith, be bold and take risk. Life itself is a risk.

I am sure that sooner than later, I will be completely out of the rat race.

Great story about the monkey. I am like the monkey. BUT unfortunately, I have a history of making wrong choices when I let go of my money and now I am more careful and would think thrice when using my money..

The program still not available in Kuching?

  19. Allan Heng on March 16th, 2007

Enroling in WA1 gave me tons of strategies that I may not have applied upon “graduating” from the course. However, for the past 2 years, I’ve slowly putting those strategies that I’ve learnt through WA1 into practices. I started venture back into the stock market, meddle with internet marketing, and continue my focus in learning how to build businesses.

Sometimes, we just need a very strong purpose to make us decide on what’s right for us. And the best things that has happen to me is learning how to make mistakes to give me the right feedback to advance forward.

To anyone who’s attending this April’s WA, be prepared for another life transformation!
