The Power of Love

A few posts ago, I talked about the power of love that one mum had for her daughter. Knowing that she only had a few months to live (after being diagnosed with breast cancer), Erin Kramp made hours of video footage of motherly advice and wisdom that her daughter could listen to when she was old enough (her daughter Peyton was only two at the time). She even prepared 20+ years of birthday and Christmas presents in advance that her daughter could receive years after she was gone.

In this post, I would like to share the story of an extraordinary love that a father has for his son. It is the story of Dick Hoyt and his son Rick. 66-year old Dick climbs mountains, runs to the ends of the earths and swims across oceans to give his son Rick, a better life.

When Rick was born, he suffered from Cerebral Palsy (as a result of the umbilical cord being caught around his neck at birth). Doctors told Dick that his son would never be able to walk or talk and that it would be best to forget about him and leave him in an institution. He would be nothing more than a vegetable for life.

Yet, Dick was determined to bring his son up like any other child and wanted to ensure that he was not deprived of anything in life as a result of his condition. One time, when Rick told his dad that his dream was to compete in a marathon, his Dad pulled, pushed and carried him all the way in their first race.

When Rick told his Dad that he felt that his disability disappeared whenever he was competing, it was all that his Dad needed to hear. Today, at age 66, Dick and his son Rock (aged 44) have competed together in 950 races, 60 marathons and 6 Iron Man Triathlons.

But the most inspiring part of his story is that Rick has successfully graduated from Boston University and his an inspiration to millions around the world. Watch the video of his story here and be awed like I have.

Let us not merely sit on the sidelines and watch and cheer these truly remarkable human beings - let’s us first of all FEEL GRATITUDE for all the BLESSINGS we are enjoying and
then use the Ricks and Dicks of this world - like Dr William Tan - as ROLE models who show
    us how POWERFUL LOVE is

it is really inspiring to listen to stories like these i think that living is a great adventure and we are able to gain everything we want we just need to believe in and simply act.possibilities and limits are our way to perceive dreams we need a revolution to start thinking positively.A revolution doesn’t mean that it is hard to realize our dreams but it maens tha t we need a trend toward happiness.Happiness is a choice.

    Wow Adam,

    amazing and inspiring video.

I suppose if everyone set their goal to achieve something for their love ones instead of for themselves, i think you’ll succeed faster and you’ll be more determined to succeed because you are doing it for your love ones.

    regards,

    Hi Adam,

The world needs people like us to give or show them the true stories inside or outside Singapore to live a more meaningful lives in time when the world seemed so lost of hopes.

I was actually inspired by a similar story when I saw a documentary when I was in Australia on holiday with my family. In that documentary, the mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer and she went on to video herself talking to her only growing up daughter every night when she is in bed so that when she is gone. Her daughter can grown up with her through those recorded tapes. When the daughter actually grown up as a adult, she told friends and relatives that she grown up with her mum by her side through the love and advices given by her mum even though her mum is not alive during her growing up years.

The next generations needs hopes and inspirations from the current people just as we recieved the knowledge, advices, inspirations, etc. to push on for a brighter future. We have a bright future and Singapore. It’s just a matter of choosing your destiny!
